Recent Adventures

The girls at the end of our day of traveling
My girls all bundled up
Jocelyn, Emma and I were able to spend a week in Washington, D.C. to visit my older sisters and their families who will both live there for the next couple years.  They met Emma for the first time and I got to meet Marcus (Emily's youngest who was born 10 days after Emma).  We had such a fabulous time and they took great care of us.  It's such a comfort to me to know where they live and when I talk with them on the phone I will be able to picture where they are now.  Here are a million pictures to document our trip.  I am so grateful for Tami and my parents for making the trip possible by taking care of Lillian and Jonas.  And, of course, to Jared for funding the trip and taking care of the kids as well.

Since Lara is pregnant and Emily and I both have newborns we did a lot of "hanging out" and spending time together, but tried to fit in some shopping and seeing the sights as well.  We went ice skating and out for hot cocoa, we had dinner together with both families almost every night, we walked around the national mall and went to a Smithsonian "American History" museum.  This was my 4th trip to D.C. but Jocelyn's first time.  Her main request was to see the white house so we made sure to walk by there.  We went out for frozen custard in the freezing weather and made homemade doughnuts and it was such a blast!

I told Jared my favorite part of the trip was being able to get to know my niece and nephews better.  To see them in their lives and homes and to get to know their personalities and to see Jocelyn interacting with them.  I have such fond memories of hanging out with my cousins every summer and I would love for my kids to have the same interaction with their cousins.  Noelle was excited to have another girl come to visit as she is usually there with 7 boys and just her to represent the feminine side!

My dear friend Sarita is in the country for a short while and we met together for our "joint" birthday dinner as our birthdays are within a month of each other.  We went out to dinner with just us and the babies we are nursing and it was such a treat to catch up with her.  We hope to be able to get all the family together soon so they can see our new house but this was a great start...

Upon the return of our trip to D.C. Jocelyn threw up on the way home from the airport and then I was throwing up by 4 am along with other unmentionable things. We were very grateful that even though we had caught the flu, we waited until we were home to really have it manifest.  I was supposed to go up to my parent's house and pick up Lillian and Jonas but I literally couldn't get out of bed the entire day.  Poor Emma spent the day on her playmat on the bed beside me and I would pull her over by me to nurse when she needed then we would sleep and I would push her over to the playmat again.  Jocelyn was recovering as well and spent the day on the couch alternating between sleeping, watching movies and coloring.  Jared was in the thick of getting a patent filed and tried to hurry home at the end of the day but I was glad we survived!  Now tomorrow we jump back into reality...

The other half of the crew

While Jocelyn, Emma and I were on our trip to D.C. and out partying, Jared held down the fort with the middle two kids.  My friend Tami watched them for two days and was a lifesaver while Jared worked.  Then my parents watched them for the remaining 5 days.  What would I do without these amazing people in my life?  The kids were safe, had fun and felt loved the whole time!  They would barely talk on the phone with me...

They had formulated an entire list of what Lillian wanted to do with Dad and Jonas while Jocelyn and I were plotting and scheming our outings with my sisters.  Lillian's list was quite the creation and here are a few examples:
  • Make cupcakes and eat chocolate cake
  • If it's hot drink ice water and have popsicles
  • If it's cold drink hot chocolate and snuggle
  • Go to Chuck E. Cheese
  • Go to a lake
  • Pack a picnic lunch
  • Go to library story time
Jared delivered on all of these did an amazing job of helping them feel like they were having a vacation as well.  He helped Lillian give her first talk in primary and she did fabulous.  He took not one picture the whole time because I had the main camera and he doesn't want to worry about it.  Luckily I took some pictures recently and can share them instead.
We found these cute dresses with the coordinating doll dresses at TJ Maxx and my mom funded us being able to buy them for all the granddaughters.  We took my niece her dress and Jocelyn and she were able to "match" at church on Sunday

Lillian continues to come up with funny terms and expressions and her latest that she calls out when she is trying to tattle tell is "Jonas called me a name tag" (meaning he called her a unkind "name").  I try not to respond at all to tattle tells but this one makes me laugh every time.

I try not to get too sappy, but with it being Valentine's day this month and all, I feel like I can brag about what a great dad Jared is.  Doesn't he look handsome getting Jonas ready for church?  And it melts my heart when he reads to the kids.
My boys getting ready for church.  Jonas gets so excited to do hair with dad and put on their ties together
I also try not to stress when my children get hurt as it just heightens their anxiety and makes them react bigger.  But, I tell you what...Recently I am seriously concerned that Jonas is headed toward some serious and permanent head damage.  Just in the last couple months he has climbed up onto the back of the couch (even though he knows the rules forbidding this) and within seconds of me seeing him and asking him to get down he toppled over the back and landed straight on the top of his head on a tile floor.  I was afraid to move him because I thought he had perhaps broken his neck.  He did essentially the same thing at a museum climbing up a bench and crashing on a concrete floor.  I feel like I am telling him all day long "Watch where you're going!" as he is walking or even running full speed ahead while looking backwards.  He has run full speed straight into the kitchen table multiple times and currently has a black eye because he did so at my parent's house last week.  I told Jared I am tempted to make Jonas wear his bike helmet all day long just to prevent further injury but he seems so reckless and I don't know what to do about it!  It's not that he's uncoordinated because he seems great at sports and hand-eye coordination, it's just plain reckless!  Any suggestions? Will he grow out of this?  I sure hope he does soon because I don't think my heart can keep skipping beats like this without having permanent damage either.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Emma has been growing up so fast and she will be 4 months here in the next week. I can't believe it!  She is "talking" or "singing" recently which is so fun.  Especially when we returned home from our trip and she hadn't seen Jared in a week she "told" him all about it with all different inflections and pitches and coos much to his delight.  It was sooo cute.  Here is the good, the bad and the ugly for the month:
The Good: She is so cute sporting the bonnet and all the moms in the "mother's room" at church agree that bonnets are way under-used for little girls these days.

The Bad: Tummy time.  She still dislikes it as much as all of my other kids have.  It's torture to listen to her be so sad
The Ugly:  How can something so cute and small create such a big mess?? And several times a day. Today she's wearing her 4th outfit...Much to Jocelyn & Lillian's delight...They love picking out new outfits for her while I'm scrubbing poop out of all the laundry
I've been contemplating the pros and cons of having four kids so close together for a number of reasons.  I recently returned from a trip to D.C. with just Jocelyn and Emma.  My oldest and my youngest...it was soooo easy.  Granted, I had my sisters cooking and cleaning for us and I was able to sleep in, but truly. It was a cake walk compared to everyday life.  People in the airport were telling me: "you're so brave to go across country with two little ones" while I was thinking: "this is a walk in the park! I only have half my kids and not even the ones that tease and fight with each other!" Lately I have been seeing the direct contrast of the day-to-day life of Jocelyn when she was a baby and now when Emma is a baby.  I've decided there are good and bad parts of being "the 4th".
Emma in Carseat
Cons:
  • Emma spends more time in her car seat as we take kids to and from school, preschool, playdates and doctor's appts.
  • She doesn't get carried around in the sling or picked up every time she cries, or rocked to sleep by yours truly because I just don't have time.  I rely on the baby swing to rock her, let her cry it out, etc.
  • She has to learn to sleep and function through tons of noise that are just constant in our house full of small kids and their friends.
  • She doesn't have as many pictures or videos taken of her because I am trying to attend to the needs of 3 other young children throughout the day
Jocelyn & Lillian giving an impromptu puppet show for Emma's entertainment one day
Pros:
  • She has a full entertainment crew/adoring committee at her disposal singing songs to her, playing pat-a-cake, talking to her or shaking rattles for her
  • She has a more experienced mother who (hopefully) is doing a better job than she was with her 1st.  I feel like I can just enjoy her more rather than worrying about every little way I do things
  •  She'll learn the talent of sleeping anywhere and through a lot of noise-this is a great life skill. Trust me
I wouldn't change our crazy situation for the world.  I think that it is beneficial for our kids to have each other to learn from and play with even if it can be chaotic.  Jared and I will be celebrating our 9th anniversary in a couple weeks and these are the combined statistics we were adding up the other day of our past 9 year adventure together:
  • 20 different church callings (responsibilities)
  • Held 9 different jobs
  •  Lived in 7 different houses
  • Survived 4 pregnancies and births for 4 wild kids
  • 2 bachelors degrees & 1 associates
  • 1 law degree
That's crazy, isn't it?? I'm hoping for a calmer next 9 years though, personally.

Family Pictures

After my last attempt at having pictures taken of all 4 kids together, it took me a couple months to muster up the energy and motivation to try again.  Especially since it was evident that we needed whole family pictures which I knew would be even worse!  My friend, Tami, made it a fairly painless experience and the kids and Jared held it together really well. I still feel very fat from birthing a baby in recent months so unfortunately I ruined a lot of the pictures just by standing in them, but here was the result of our family picture excursion last weekend.
Now I just need to print out the pictures and get them on the wall so Emma feels part of the family :)
