The Tooth, The Whole Tooth and Nothing but the Tooth

Jocelyn had a really unfortunate turn of events this week.  She had injured one of her front two teeth (well both of them, but one was really bad) last October in a bike crash.  On the initial trip to the dentist after the accident she told us it was definitely loose and probably dead so we needed to watch for certain signs that would let us know if she needed to pull the tooth.  Me, being the hopeful mom that I am, started to get really excited because the tooth seemed to almost look less brown lately and she wasn’t complaining of it being as sensitive when we brushed her teeth.  Well, on Monday when I went to brush her teeth I jumped almost a mile because right above the dead tooth was an abscess about the size of the diamond in my wedding ring!  Yuck!  It came out of nowhere!

We scheduled with the dentist to have it looked at the next day and sure enough, they pulled it right there and then.  Jocelyn was amazingly brave and only lost composure after the procedure when she was forced to bite down on gauze for 20 minutes and taste the blood, so we brought her straight home.  Before I even had time to borrow her requested movie from the next door neighbors, Jocelyn had sacked out on the couch.  I’m afraid I was the one that was really mourning the loss of her tooth.

Now she is without one of her front teeth and, don’t you worry, apparently it doesn’t grow in for another 3-4 years!!   The doctor was prepping me for the procedure and when I asked her about the length of time for the new tooth to come in.  She replied: “Oh, 7 or 8.”  To which I replied “months?”   No, the dentist said, “age 7 or 8.”  Apparently a bone will grow in place of the missing tooth and the new tooth will have to push through the bone to come down so it will be a long process.  We discussed several options about a false temporary tooth whether removable or semi-permanent and, for valid reasons, the dentist advised against both for her age and situation.  I’m pretty bummed about the whole thing because I don’t want her to have a stigma attached to the whole thing but we'll work through it.  Of course, as my sister reminded me, I need to keep it in perspective because this is just a baby tooth and if we lived in the 1800s she could have died from the infection SO I guess I am grateful she is in good overall health, right?
 Before
 During
After (Lilly wanted to show off her teeth as well)

Lillian has regressed big time lately with her potty training.  She has done well for about 6 months and even through the birth of the baby, etc.  However, in the last week I have had to clean up accident after accident.  And not just little “I didn’t make it to the toilet in time” situations, but multiple poops in the panties, peeing all over the floor at friends’ houses, puddles all over my carpet, etc.  What is up with that?  I should probably keep things in perspective since Jocelyn was barely potty training at this age, and I didn’t have two kids in diapers like last time, but seriously??  I think we might have to go back to our “beans in the jar” routine so she can earn something if she can keep her panties dry all day.  But it seems as if she doesn’t even care or get disappointed about it like she used to.  I’m at a loss…

  1. I love that each time I check in you there are a couple of new posts to enjoy and pour over... Tell Jocelyn I'm super proud of her toothy-situation! And, I commend you on your patience with potty training... Not looking forward to that one in my house!
Jonas is the cutest little munchkin man. I want to nibble on that billy goat chin.
Also: Go Kelsey! If she needs any tips (I'm sure her training will give her all the pre-trip info, of course) my brother is always eager to talk Brazil. That is so cool of her.
Happy spring to you, Otterpop Family! Much love from across the pond.

  2. That stinks about Jocelyn's tooth - I would initially have a bit of a hard time with that too. The good thing is if others are like you & me, they don't know what age kids start losing their teeth at. And I bet people will always guess that she is older than she is, plus with her being so smart & all. But I know that is not a complete consolation.

That's tough with the potty training. It seems common, but still tough.

And Jonas is so cute & growing so fast! He reminds me of Dyllan a little.
So did Kelsy get her call to Brazil? That's awesome! When does she leave?

  3. Wow what a brave girl. I was trying to picture Seth in that situation and it was hard to think of him being so composed. Good for Joc. Man potty training is rough. Just when you think you are golden... Seth goes through waves. He recently has become lazy and just hasn't wanted to stop playing so he will hold it until he has a small accident. We have had to go back to stickers again! That has helped though. I guess they just need a little tune up and reminders:) Good luck.
