Jared and Kid Update

Emma is what you call in the business a "repeat offender." She sneaks into the office and 8 out of 10 times you can count on her sneaking out this one particular pen, a certain paper from Jonas's cubby and then taking them both over to the first step to scribble all over the paper.  I don't even get her in trouble besides asking her to use pens on the table instead of the carpet, but after she's done I put them back away and within 24 hrs. you can count on her getting the same two items out and repeating the process.  The same story with the pantry.  Pretty much every time I can count on her taking out this bath and body works bag from my stash of bags, filling it with these two cans of olives and toting it all over the house.  I am certainly not complaining. I'd rather have this then frantically emptying every cupboard and bin all over the floor every hour.  Goodness knows we've all had toddlers that do that.  It just cracks me up.  She also learned the beauty of toilet paper recently and, to be honest, I was glad it waited until she was 2 except now she does more damage.  In one night she managed to fill the entire upstairs toilet with a whole roll of toilet paper and then start on the downstairs one before she got caught.
I would also like to thank the makers of baby food for inventing these handy packets.  I am pretty sure Emma would not be alive today were it not for these brilliant sources of nourishment. Apple"boss," as she calls it, is her favorite and she has at least one a day since they are so easy and clean while we are on the go taking the older kids around or running errands.  Emma has a standard answer of "no" regarding ANYTHING we ask her these days.  Me: "Would you like some milk? "Emma: "NO!" Me: "Ok, Water or nothing?" Emma: "MILK!!"as if I had never offered that to her to begin with.  Good grief!  I am hoping she comes out of this phase sooner rather than later but I need to keep dreaming because she just turned 2...

Call me a party pooper if you'd like, but I had to shut down a party at 4 am the other morning.  Jonas had come into our room that same night about 1 am and I eventually ignored him enough to convince him his bed would be superior to our floor.  Well, a few hours later I heard him talking so I jumped up thinking "I better get him out of his room before he wakes up Emma." I was half asleep so it took me opening up the bedroom door to realize that both Emma and Jonas were talking and that wasn't all...Every single light was on. The overhead bedroom light, the lamp, Jonas's flashlight and both kids were in Emma's crib having a grand ole time.  Party central in the middle of the night!! I had to turn off all the lights, get Jonas back in his own bed and then it took me another hour with Emma on the couch convincing her it really was time to sleep. Sheesh!  The next night was even worse having Emma up pretty much the whole night on and off.

Jonas still really enjoys his preschool with all his buddies.  In fact they probably enjoy each other a little too much for effective teaching sometimes!!  About a week before his birthday he told me in excitement "look mom!  I learned how to hold up 3 fingers!"  We have seriously been working on that (on and off) since his 3rd birthday.  I just had to laugh because of course he mastered it days before he turned 4 and would have to hold up 4 fingers!!  These are some pictures of them doing preschool at our house this last month.

Lillian continues to enjoy her art class and taking on first grade.  The kids have their primary program this coming Sunday.  Jonas and Lillian were very proactive memorizing their speaking parts quickly and were pretty proud of themselves. Lilly was cracking us up the other day because we were having a family home evening on being a peacemaker and a problem solver (or something to that effect) and  had all the right answers, except in practice that is.  Lillian would be saying the right answer to Jared's question as she was reaching out to tease Jonas!  Jared was even giving them opportunities to act out the right way and the wrong way to handle hypothetical situations that he was giving them and they were coming up with some very positive and creative ways to handle those, but as they were turning theory into practice it was not matching up at all!  Greg and Maren happened to be in attendance that night and were getting  kick out of watching the duplicity of it all.

My little vampires
Jocelyn was very thrilled to come home and tell me that she got awarded Student of the Month for October!  I have seen a lot of improvement in her effort and outlook on work in the last month which I am very happy about.  I pretty much gave up and told her she was in charge of making sure her homework was completed because I was done fighting her over it.  They had optional homework for October involving cleaning out a pumpkin and counting the number of seeds inside and comparing that to their original guess.  Well, don't you worry 414 pumpkin seeds later we made it!!

Last month Jared and I went to the Oakland temple early on a Saturday morning and as we were finishing up he ran into an old mission companion that he had served with in Texas 15 years ago!  They had really gotten along well and Jared had looked for him on facebook but had never had any luck and not stayed in touch with him.  It was such a weird coincidence since he was just in town on business, but we were so pleased that they could catch up for a minute.  They are the same age and both have 4 kids, and were able to catch each other up on careers, etc.  It was so fun to be able to meet him since I have heard so many stories about Elder Alaiasa.
This week Jared and I had a very expensive date to (drumroll please)...the Emergency Room.  Jared's health has been really not well concerning his Ulcerative Colitis and then Wednesday afternoon he started to feel a lot of pressure in his chest.  A couple of the symptoms (extreme chest pain and difficulty breathing) were mimicking a heart attack so after being rejected from Insta-Care (because they told him they'd probably send him to the ER) we ended up just taking him there.  Luckily, Greg and Maren (jared's brother) live close so we were able to call them over to take care of kids so I could drive Jared to the hospital and try to figure out what was going on.  The only time I have seen him in more pain was for his kidney stones.  We didn't know if this was some side effect to all the medication he is on for his UC or some complication that could indicate crohn's disease so several hours later after getting on some pain and anti-nausea medication and receiving news that every single one of his lab tests and EKGs, etc. were totally normal we were stumped.  It turned out he was having an esophageal spasm.  I never even knew these existed but apparently they are common enough and totally mimic heart attack symptoms.  We were able to be home that night and he even worked from home the next day but my goodness! Talk about a crazy night.  *No pictures of Jared in the hospital bed at his request*
